In the wake of the signing of a memorandum of understanding, Mr McLaren said Wagga residents needed to approach the concept as a positive way for the city to enhance its connection with the Australian and international market, not as a development that could take away from local businesses.
"I'd just urge people to make sure they understand what the development is and what it will before they make their judgements on it," he said.
"There will be a lot of conflicting information getting out there."
Mr McLaren, who made trips to China with Member for Wagga Daryl Maguire over the proposal, said the Wagga community stood to benefit exponentially from the deal if it goes ahead.
"For retailers here, it will be the perfect opportunity to get engaged with China and the rest of the world all from Copland Street.
"If businesses are smart enough they can buy into the stalls themselves.
"Wagga was chosen because it's in a western country and is in a central location in Australia with the appropriate space required to complete the development.
"The world and Australia will come to Wagga."
